This gorgeous little jug is an original vintage c1950s hand painted Mason's Patent Ironstone China " Hydra " jug in first class condition. No cracks or chips. Slightly crackled and signs of wear to the bottom of the jug. It is fully back stamped and is in the Mandarin pattern.
The earthenware, Ironstone China, has been patented by Masons in 1813. It was invented by the then owner, Miles Mason, with the help of his three sons who then went on the run Masons of Staffordshire. Much of this new pottery took on the Chinese influence which was incredibly popular and fashionable at the time amongst the wealthier classes.
The strength of ironstone meant that the factory was able to produce objects of considerable size, such as large ornamental vases and garden seats. The Chinese influence of very bright colours and Chinese flowers remained one of the factories most recognisable features.
The history of Masons continued throughout the 19th and 20th centuries and eventually became part of the Wedgewood Group in 1973. Unfortunately it closed its doors in 2000.
